This reprint from 1957 is a new edition with fresh new illustrations and additional scholarship of the editor. Fithian left his home in New Jersey in 1770 to enter the College of New Jersey at Princeton. Upon graduation, he was recommended by the college as a tutor at the plantation of Councilor Carter. After a year with this landed family, Fithian developed an affection for this wealthy family and wrote a delightful picture of their everyday life on the plantation.
